Partners, Sylvia Ripley and Christopher Addison have an ambitious agenda for their gallery in Washington DC

When Addison/Ripley Fine Art was established in 1981 in a large, historic carriage house at 9 Hillyer Court, behind the Phillips Collection, partners Sylvia Ripley and Christopher Addison already had an ambitious agenda for the gallery and an independent spirit fueled by a strong background in museums, art conservation and fine art. Committed to strong representation of Washington based artists as well as, at the time, emerging talents from other communities, Addison/Ripley has continued that tradition for 30 years. Now, as one of Washington, D.C. ‘s foremost contemporary galleries, housed in premium space in Upper Georgetown at Book Hill, the gallery continues to thrive and to present challenging and familiar art works in expansive exhibits throughout the year, often commissioning exhibits by outside curators in order to vary, enlarge and improve the DNA of the gallery.

We feature changing exhibitions of work by leading area and internationally recognized artists as well as work by younger, emerging artists. Work in all media is represented in the gallery and styles range from traditional landscape to overall abstraction. The gallery displays work in large scale: painting, photography, drawing and sculpture, and more modest scale in those same mediums. The gallery frequently arranges exhibits in other spaces for our clients and artists. In addition, the gallery publishes multiples by gallery artists such as Dan Treado and Frank Day.

An important part of the gallery’s work for the last fifteen years has been to serve as consultant to the United States Department of State acquiring, installing and presenting collections of artworks for newly built American Embassies throughout the world in such countries as Tajikistan, Croatia, Cambodia, Russia, Guinea, Cote D’Ivoire, Colombia, Peru and Jamaica. Those permanent collections in chancelleries in more than fifteen countries have added, significantly, to cultural diplomacy efforts and to the quality of life for American diplomats.

Addison/Ripley arranges changing exhibits in off-site locations offering our curatorial expertise to corporations and institutions.

Among the services available through the gallery for private clients, other art consultants, interior designers and corporate entities are art acquisition and sale and consultations for placement, lighting, framing and value. We buy and sell at auction on behalf of clients and offer extensively researched professional advice in this area for our clients. In addition, we work extensively with colleagues throughout the United States and the world, extending our reach and ability to offer our clients the finest work available anywhere.

Since 1986, the gallery has been an active member of the Art dealers Association of Greater Washington and, more recently, of the Georgetown Galleries on Book Hill.
