Wanda Miller Matthews
With Trees, 1976
color etching, ed. 30, 23 7/8 x 25 1/4"
Many times from graduate school until recently, I have used images of myself in my work, at first focusing on the head and figure alone as in traditional self portraits, then on myself in my environment as in the 1971 work 'Outside'and 'With Trees' in 1976. Gradually my environment -interiors, homes, homes in landscape became equally or more important to me as sources of imagery, so that for some years I have not felt the urge to turn this searching scrutiny on myself as primary channel for expression but for the time being, seek it in the world around me. about the artist
Mathews was a soft spoken, somewhat fragile person and this is reflected in her work. She lived in Colorado and the view from her studio window looked out on the Rocky Mountains. She received her MFA at the University of Iowa with Mauricio Lasansky and her printing technique was impeccable. She said she wanted her work to speak like a whisper yet be memorable.
