about the artist
Ganso came to the US from Germany as a teenager and by 1914 was taking evening classes at the National Academy School of Fine Arts and supporting himself as a baker. He met George Ault, Doris Lee, Charles Rosen, George Bellows and other artists at Woodstock and stayed there. By 1930 he began to be invited to exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Chicago Art Institute and other museums. He was awarded the Pennell Memorial Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy in 1938.
