COLLECTOR’S ROUNDTABLE – Smithsonian American Art Museum


The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the nation’s first collection of American art, is an unparalleled record of the American experience. Its holdings – more than 41,000 works – tell the stories of America through the visual arts and represent one of the most inclusive collections of American art in any museum today. Artworks in the collection reveal key aspects of the country’s rich artistic and cultural history from the colonial period to today.

About the Series

The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s new series, Collector’s Roundtable, opens the doors to the exciting world of art collecting. These special sessions provide a forum for private collectors, and those just thinking about starting to collect, to learn from nationally acclaimed experts and to share their experiences with fellow collectors. Each session offers insights and invaluable advice from museum directors, curators, private dealers, and consultants. Series participants may have the opportunity to view private collections and visit artist studios. Collector’s Roundtable continues in the fall

Advance registration is required for this series, the cost is $20 for each session or $50 for all three spring sessions. To register, visit the Museum’s online calendar at AmericanArt.si.edu. What Makes a Good Collector?

James Cuno, president and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, is a formidable scholar with strong experience in leading encyclopedic museums. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Cuno has written and lectured  extensively – throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan – on topics ranging from French caricature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to contemporary American art, as well as on the role of art museums in contemporary American cultural policy. His recent books include Whose Muse? Art Museums and the Public Trust and the forthcoming Who Owns Antiquity? Museums and the Battle over Our Ancient Heritage.

Before his tenure at the Art Institute of Chicago, he served as professor and director of the Courtauld Institute of Art., University of London from 2002 to 2004, and as professor and Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot Director of the Harvard University Art Museum from 1991 to 2002

Thomas Colville has been a distinguished private dealer in fine nineteenth century American and European paintings, drawings, and watercolors since 1972. He has worked with individuals, corporations, and museums throughout the world to broaden their collections. While specializing in the works of such American artists as George Innes, John La Farge, James McNeill Whistler, Sanford Grifford, Eastman Johnson, and Ermil Carlsen, Colville is one o the world’s leading dealers in French Barbizon paintings. Thomas Colville Fine Art has showrooms in New Haven, Connecticut, and New York City.

Debra Force is a specialist in American paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries with over twenty-five years of auction, museum, and gallery experience. She offers her extensive knowledge of the field to advise new and seasoned collectors in developing their collections, understanding the market, appraisals, and acquiring the most suitable works of art. In addition to lecturing frequently across the United States, she appears regularly as an expert on the popular PBS series Antiques Roadshow.

She is president and founder of Debra Force Fine Art, Inc. in New York City which provides appraisal and consulting services in American art in addition to being a fine art gallery. Previously, she served from 1984 to 1993 as senior vice president and head of the American paintings department and as a vice president of the appraisals department at Christie’s in New York, and later became director of American art for Hirschl & Adler Galleries and director of Beacon Hill Fine Art, both in New York City. REVEALING THE LIGHT: MEZZOTINT ENGRAVINGS AT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY


Master mezzotint artist Frederick Mershimer, one of the world’s foremost practitioners of mezzotint engraving, will be featured in two special free events. The Special Collections Research Center of the Georgetown University Library, and the Department of Art, Music, and Theater invite you to:

April 11 Friday  6:00-7:00 p.m.
Mr. Mershimer will demonstrate and explain the mezzotint printmaking process. Georgetown University Walsh Building, Room 296

April 12  Saturday  2:00-4:00 p.m.
Mr Mershimer will discuss his art and his work.
Georgetown University Art Collections, in collaboration with the Washington Print Club, will host a special presentation and reception celebrating the publication of Mershimer’s catalogue raisonné published by Stone + Press, Copies of the book will be available for purchase and artist’s signing
