There are probably as many self portraits as there are artists. Nevertheless, some of the most fascinating works created by artists are the images they render of themselves. In this circumstance, they are both the observer and the observed. While on the one hand the artist is limited by having to be the model, the more interesting side is how the artist wants to be viewed by the world. This very personal idiom may be the reason that self portraits have been studied, exhibited and collected through the ages.

This collection of American Self Portraits covers almost 100 years, from 1924 to 2000. Each portrait, where possible, is accompanied with a statement by the artist. Other statements or quotations were taken from essays, articles or books about that particular artist. The purpose of the statements is to shed further insight about the artists, their work, and their time. The collection as a whole reflects the direction and importance of printmaking in the twentieth century and a bit beyond.
